Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is one of the small breeds of dogs in existence today. It is often classified as a toy dog by the AKC. The breed owes its origin to the United Kingdom, but it has become very popular in several countries today. It is currently rated by the AKC as the 18th most popular dog breed in the United States. The increased popularity of the breed makes it easier to find puppies when in search of them. There are many breeders who specialize in breading cavalier king puppies for purchase by the public.

Cavaliers have existed as lap dogs throughout their history. Those that have attain full size only compared to adolescents from larger spaniel breeds. They rise only up to one feet at the shoulders when they attain full size. They range in weight from four kilograms to eight kilograms. It is not typical for the tails to be docked. Curly hair is not a breed standard even though little curling is allowed.

Feathering is a very typical quality of the breed. Feet, ear, feet, and legs are some of the areas that are commonly feathered. Feathering should not be cut to further conform to breed standards. English Toy Spaniel is closely related to cavaliers in appearance. The resemblance is because the two breeds occurred as one as late as a century ago.

The AKC recognizes four main colors of these breed. The colors may be plain or they may be combined to form different patterns. Brown, black, white, and tan are some of the most commonly observed colors. The breed standard is highly dependent on color combinations. If the color combination is wrong, the dog may be disqualified from the breed.

The breed is known for being affectionate, playful, and patient. These qualities make them a good choice for family pets because they are good with other pets and small kids. They are also friendly with other pets and breeds. They have a high ability to adapt to new environments and families. However, for proper coexistence with other pets, some training during early years may be necessary.

The level of intelligence is moderate in this breed when it comes to working and obedience. The fact that they like cuddling makes them good as company dogs. Medical patients and old people are recommended to use the breed. Sportsmanship and activity is very high in the breed as they have excelled well in conformation shows, agility and obedience.

It is very simple to maintain this breed. No trimming is necessary, but weekly brushing is necessary. If the dog plays outside, making the coat and features very dirty, one may have to trim it occasionally. The market has several maintenance supplies to pick from.

Health problems among cavaliers are not very many. However, the most prevalent disease is the MVD, mitral valve disease. MVD is so dangerous that it is responsible for most deaths. It causes death by causing heart failure.
